Why We Run: Rhonda's Story
I was diagnosed with breast cancer in October of 2011. I had a double mastectomy in November and started chemotherapy in December. Wow. What a huge disruption to my life. You just never think it's going to happen to you. I made it through four months of grueling chemotherapy. During that time I lost all of my hair and was tested both physically and emotionally. What I kept through it all though was my faith, friends and family. During those months of chemotherapy, I saw and met many people that were up against cancer battles that were even more difficult than my own.
To make it even worse, many of these people did not have the support system of family and friends that I had. Several months later, I was told I was in remission and I began to find my new normal. Even after this excellent news, I couldn't help, but think about those that continued to battle cancer. That is why I chose to participate in Run4Life. The run provides me with a platform to share my cancer journey and give back to individuals that are facing this horrific disease right here in our community.
Why We Run: Kirsten's Story
Kirsten Abderhalden has run in Run4Life (formerly Lungs4Life) every year since her father was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer. This year the race takes on a whole new meaning for Kirsten. In July of 2016, Kirsten‘s father, Heinz Loser, lost his battle with lung cancer. With his passing, Kirsten has chosen to find strength and comfort in continuing to participate in Run4Life. Not only is she hoping to raise a record breaking amount of money for Team Heinz, but she is also hoping to set another record.

Kirsten’s father, placed in the top three of his age category every year, including the races when he was in treatment. She even recalls her father beating her to the finish line more than once.
