What You Need To Know
Thank you for serving as captain for the 2017 Dragon Boat Upstate Festival. This event marks our 11th anniversary. We currently hold the world record in most funds raised for a Dragon Boat event, but that isn't slowing us down from raising even more funds for the cancer patients and families in our community!
In the past ten years, Dragon Boat has raised over $2.2 million to support of local families and hosts more than 1,200 visitors and team members during the annual event. Paddlers, volunteers and supporters enjoy a day at the lake while supporting cancer research, survivorship programs and other cancer services at the Cancer Institute of Greenville Health System.
We want to make sure that all team captains and paddlers have all of the tools they need to help us continue our mission and have prepared this page to be a resource to all participants. If you have any questions, please contact Amanda Lenar.
- All teams must raise a minimum of $3,500 before Saturday, May 6, 2017.
- The team captain or a team member from your team must come to one of our two Team Trainings. If you are unable to attend one of these trainings, you will need to set up a date and time to meet with Amanda Lenar and Hope Collins at the GHS Downtown location.

Teams can be formed from any group of people: colleagues, neighbors, friends, family, etc. Our deadline for team registration is Friday March 31! Register your team today.
- Each team participates in at least two race heats. Winners of preliminary heats will advance to the championship later in the afternoon.
- Teams are encouraged to decorate their tent. Prizes will be awarded for best tailgate design and creativity.

The Dragon Boat Upstate Festival is a patient- and community-centered event with an emphasis on safety. We will continue to enforce a strict intolerance to questionable behavior from all attendees. Any decision to pull an individual or entire team from participating in a race will be made in concert with GHS and 22 Dragons staff, along with contracted special event security. If questionable behavior continues, individuals or entire teams can be asked to leave Portman Marina altogether.
Children under the age of 16 are highly discouraged from attending the Dragon Boat Upstate Festival due to the nature of this event. If participants do not make alternate childcare arrangements, they will be required to pre-register any child under age 16 on the Dragon Boat website and pay a mandatory $15 fee and complete a liability waiver. This does not allow a child to participate in the day’s festivities, but simply ensures safety precautions are being followed. Children who accompany a parent to the event must be under adult supervision at all times and remain at the team’s designated tent area at all times. If safety regulations are not followed, you will be asked to leave the event.
Pets are not permitted at the event, with the only exception being for service animals. Any attendee that shows up with a pet will be asked to leave the event immediately.

Captains and their teams are encouraged to fund raise between now and May 6, using the Dragon Boat Upstate Festival website. Fundraising is a team effort and while it isn't required to participate in the event, every paddler can help raise money for cancer research. Most teams raise more than the required $3,500 through supportive friends or matching donations.
Prizes will be awarded to the top two non-sponsored teams at the event. To be eligible, you may not be a corporate sponsored team and you must raise a minimum of $10,000. Fundraising deadline to be eligible for prizes: April 19, at 5 p.m.
